Boat Safety Checklist

When did you last----------- ?

·  Check your high water alarm?

·   Check that your bilge pumps operate?

·   Check that your vapor detector is functional?

·   Check that your fire suppression system is charged?

·   Check that your sea-cocks are operational?

·   Check that your propeller shaft and rudder shaft stuffing box packing isn’t leaking?

·   Check your out-drive boots for signs of cracking and rubber rot?

·   Check that your engine warning systems work?

·   Check that your engine space ventilation fans and ductwork are operating and in good shape?

·   Check the condition of your fuel lines?

·   Check the condition of your through-hull fittings.

·   Check that all hose connections below the waterline are double clamped?

·   Check that your limber holes are not blocked with debris?

·   Check that your horn works?

·   Check that your navigation of anchor lights are operational?

·   Check that your fire extinguishers are fully charged, remove them from the bracket and shake the unit is be certain the charge is loose?

·   Check for insect nests in the discharge nozzle of your fire extinguishers?

·   Check that the vent/s from your fuel tank/s are not blocked by debris or insect nests?

·   Check that your VHF radio is properly broadcasting?

·   Check that you carbon monoxide detector is working?

·   Check that your engine’s flame arrestor is clean?

·   Check for water in your bilge?  Your bilge should be dry!  If you do have water in your bilge, do you know where the water is coming from?

·   Check for oil in the bilge?  You shouldn’t have any!  If you do, find out where it’s coming from and fix it now!

·   Do you have dark streaks in the bilge that are in line with your drive belts?  If you do, find out what’s going on. It could be trouble.

·   Checked the condition of your sea-water pump impellers?

·   Check the condition of your engine’s water circulation hoses?

·   Check the condition of your engine’s drive belts?

·   Check that your engine’s instruments are working?

·   Check that your shore-power connections and cables don’t show signs of arcing or overheating?

·   Check that the boat’s wiring is properly supported?

·   Check that your water supply connections and hoses aren’t leaking?

·   Check that the bitter end of your anchor rode is attached to the boat?

·   Check that your windlass is operational and that you know where your handle is for emergency manual operation?

·   Check the condition of your standing rigging?  Inspect your shrouds for broken wires and the terminal for corrosion?

·   Check that the rigging tension is correct and verified that ring-dings, cotter pins or locking nuts are installed on your turnbuckles?

·   Check the condition of your steering cables and sheaves? 

·   Check that your spreader angles are correct?

·   Check chain-plate alignment?

·   Check chain-plates for cracks, rust and other signs of stress and corrosion?

·   Check swage fittings for cracks?

·   Check welds and rivets in masts and booms.  Look for cracks and signs of corrosion?

·   Check for galvanic corrosion where stainless steel or bronze fittings are installed on aluminum masts?

·   Check your mast-step for signs of corrosion and crushing?

·   Check mast blocks to ensure the must is properly secured where it passes through the deck?

·   Check deck-mounted mast-steps to ensure that the structures in the deck and bulkheads below are in good shape?

·   Check 1 X 19 shroud wires for fishhooks?  Wear gloves and run some TP (toilet paper) up and down the shrouds.  If it tears, the wire should be replaced!

·   Check mast tangs are properly aligned with the loads on your shroud?
